A teaching career is only a TIP way

The Teacher Immersion Program is an FGCU partnership program with area school districts that supports individuals who have an immediate and enthusiastic interest in teaching careers. The aim of the program is simple: to prepare qualified and quality teachers for grades K-12 who will assume full-time classroom responsibilities in fall 2005 in counties in Southwest Florida, especially in the targeted areas of science, mathematics, elementary and special education.

During an intensive weekend program, the TIP Academy will develop the candidate's knowledge and skill relative to classroom management, best instructional practices, literacy strategies for content areas, and more. Academy participants will earn eighteen (18) credits toward professional certification and education competence through a University Certificate Program.

The TIP Academy is designed to prepare teachers in grades kindergarten through 12. Participating candidates will have opportunities to develop their own best practices and classroom management strategies, study reading and writing theory and research, prepare themselves to make reading and writing connections and to use writing effectively in the classroom.

The Academy will begin on Friday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. at FGCU in Fort Myers. The first course in the academy will be "Curriculum and Instruction."

Students are responsible for tuition, fees and textbooks for 18 graduate hours of course work plus various supplies. Students may be eligible for low-cost student loans in the summer term as well as a matriculation scholarship for the final three hours of study.

Participants in the program will be enrolled in 18 hours of graduate credit in education. Courses taken through the program will apply to certification requirements for a professional certificate and also may be transferred into FGCU graduate programs toward a master's degree, if application for graduate school is made prior to completing 12 hours of course work.

Applications must be received no later than Feb. 4. For more information, call Dr. Marci Greene at (239) 590-7781.
