Santa Claus came early this year!

The establishment of a Center for Environmental Research by Florida Gulf Coast University is a very large step for economic development in Charlotte County. At a Dec. 6 press conference, Dr. William Merwin, President of Florida Gulf Coast University, announced the $3 million gift and 67 acres of land from Kitson & Partners to establish the state-of-the-art facility at Babcock Ranch in Charlotte County that will house a cutting-edge education and research program focused on meeting the long-term environmental challenges of Southwest Florida. The total gift is valued at $7.6 million!

At the press conference, Mr. Kitson stressed the research center will serve as an economic driver, not only for the new Babcock Ranch community, but will create employment opportunities. It is envisioned the Center for Environmental Research will be a national showcase of innovation in smart growth and innovation.

In addition, the center will take on a leadership role in the study and restoration of uplands and wetlands, engaging in sustainable land use, and in conservation of natural resources. Also, regional concerns will be addressed regarding the use and conservation of natural resources by supporting faculty research and education through the incorporation of knowledge gained from environmental research.

It is anticipated that a more sustainable environment for Florida and the global community will be the outcome because of the work of the Center for Environmental Research. As a result, the center will become known internationally for significant environmental sustainability advances.

From the economic development perspective, the attraction of the life sciences industry will provide linkages to the university research and enable corporations to align their research as well, locating their companies here enabling them to do cutting edge research focused on meeting long-term environmental planning challenges.

A Center for Environmental Research for Charlotte County is the perfect economic development present.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
