Punta Gorda was ranked among the top 10 small metropolitan areas in a study by an economic think tank.  The Miliken Institute, a nonprofit independent economic organization based in Santa Monica, California, ranked Punta Gorda at No. 7 on the list of the 96 smallest metros, part of its annual Best Performing Cities list.  The Best Performing Cities ranks 296 metropolitan areas in the United States based on wage and salary, job and high-tech output growth, according to the Miliken Institute's Web site.  The index measures actual performance versus future performance indicators.
